Scheduled to discuss judicial efforts to combat addiction at ICJA Conference

Fort Wayne, Ind. – A statewide conference of criminal justice professionals will hear from Allen Superior Court Judge Wendy W. Davis on local judicial efforts to combat substance abuse.

Davis will speak to the Indiana Criminal Justice Association’s (ICJA) fall conference on “Battling the Drug Crisis from the Bench.” Allen County is a statewide leader in efforts to help drug and alcohol offenders overcome addiction through alternatives to incarceration. She speaks to the conference, taking place in Michigan City, on Thursday.

“Allen County is an innovator in the field of alternative sentencing and probation,” Judge Davis said. “Ample community supervision and treatment are the keys to giving people the chance to rehabilitate and conserving the scarce resources available to the Courts.”

Allen County’s alternative sentencing programs include: Community Corrections, Reentry Court, Restoration Court (Mental Health), Adult Probation, HOPE Probation, Criminal Division Services, Drug Court, Alcohol Countermeasures Program, Pretrial Services, Joint Veterans Court (Circuit and Superior Courts) and the Allen County Pretrial Pilot Project.

In addition to telling the conference about programs that work, Judge Davis will discuss current service gaps, such as shortages in the availability of transitional housing and in the funding available to assist indigent offenders.

“The work and resources we dedicate in Allen County to rehabilitating offenders while keeping the community safe pays off in lives saved and families restored,” Davis said. “Ours is a great story to tell and I’m excited that the ICJA invited me to tell it.”
